The Georgia Football Machine

For the first time in the College Football Playoff era their is a repeat National Champion which is the Georgia Bulldogs as they completed a 15-0 capped off by a 65-7 thrashing of TCU on January 9th.  The Dawgs became the first school since the Alabama Crimson Tide to repeat as National Champions when Alabama repeated in 2011 and 2012.  Georgia Bulldogs quarterback Stetson Bennett finished his Georgia career with an incredible 29-3 record and I think will go down as the best quarterback in school history.  I found this interesting stat, in the 4 College Football Playoff games he started,  he was named the Offensive MVP in each game.  This Georgia team was one of the best National Championship teams I can recall, the 58 point margin was the biggest ever in a National Championship game since the 2004 Southern California Trojans (USC) smashed Oklahoma 55-19 by 36 points.

When the Dawgs survived against the Ohio State Buckeyes 42-41 on New Years Eve in one of the College Football Semi-Final games we all knew they would beat TCU as the Georgia Ohio State game was the real National Championship game, sadly the Horned Frogs were no match for the Georgia machine from Athens as it was a 65-7 rout on January 9th.  The SEC has 4 won straight National Championships in the College Football Playoffs which started with Joe Burrow and LSU in 2019 where it includes Alabama in 2020 and Georgia in back to back to years as the SEC is a very strong conference in football as it has shown.  Since the 1998 College Football season the SEC began it’s dominance winning National Championships which includes the BCS era.  Alabama has the most with 6 National Championships (2009, 2011,2012, 2015, 2017, 2020), LSU is second with 3 (2007, 2019), yes in 2003 LSU did win the BCS National Championship but finished second to USC in AP Poll despite finishing first in the coaches poll.  Florida won 2 National Champions (2006, 2008) while Georgia is currently the king with the back to back, while Auburn won one in 2010 and Tennessee in 1998.

What Head Coach Kirby Smart has built with the Georgia Bulldogs has made them the new gold standard in College Football.  Kirby Smart use to be the longtime defensive coordinator at Alabama under Nick Saban where they won 4 National Championships.  Now Kirby Smart has built the new Alabama in Athens Georgia.  The Bulldogs the last 2 seasons went 26-1 which includes back to back National Championships.  Kirby Smart has built a strong defense in Athens while the offense has gotten better under their quarterback Stetson Bennett.  Kirby has recruited really good players at a high level and has developed them as well while also putting together a really good coaching staff.  The Georgia machine won’t be going away anytime soon.
