Chicago Bears 2021 NFL Draft

Going into this 2021 NFL Draft the Chicago Bears really had to find their future quarterback after striking out with Mitchell Trubisky. The Bears traded up with the New York Giants to select Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields at #11 overall. I had Justin Fields as my second ranked quarterback behind Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence who was the top pick in the draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. What I love about Fields is his strong arm, very athletic, very underrated as a scrambler, showed a lot of toughness, and playing in a lot of big games. Look what he did during the College Football Playoff in that Semi-Final game Mercedes-Benz Superdome in Louisiana against Clemson on January 1, 2021 where he threw 6 touchdowns against the Tigers as Ohio State rolled to a 49-28 victory. I remember in that game Fields scrambled and got hit hard by a Clemson defender in the ribs area where he missed only one play and then he just went off against the Tigers like he was still in a groove. I remember in 2019 against arch rival Michigan Justin Fields suffered a leg injury but that didn’t stop him torching the Wolverines. That’s why I really liked Justin Fields his toughness and hopefully the Bears can develop him well and not rush him to the playing field.
The Bears in second round traded up and selected Oklahoma State offensive tackle Teven Jenkins with the 39th overall pick who I had first round grade on and I think the Bears got great value in with this pick. Jenkins is about 6′ 6″, at 317 lbs with 33 ½” arms. Jenkins is a very big physical lineman who is a mauler and finishes his blocks with a purpose. Jenkins played mostly right tackle at Oklahoma State but he did play some left tackle as well. With the Bears releasing their starting left tackle Charles Leno earlier this week, Jenkins has a chance to be the starting left tackle for the Bears this September. I love his size, feet, movement and he is very experienced with 35 starts.
In the 5th round at 151 overall the Bears picked Larry Borom a offensive tackle from Missouri who is 6′ 5″, 322 LBS, with 33 1/8″ Arms. Just like Bears second round pick Teven Jenkins, Larry is a mauler with physicality with a very big body. Borom played both guard spots and offensive tackle spots at Missouri and I could see the Bears use him at different spots on the offensive line. I really liked how he uses his hands against defenders in College at Missouri and he played very well against Alabama who year after year produces a lot of NFL talent. I could see the Bears use Borom as a swing tackle in certain situations.
The Bears used one of there three draft picks in the sixth round adding Khalil Herbert at 217 overall. Khalil is a running back who originally committed to Kansas and then transferred to Virginia Tech in his final year of College Football in 2020. Khalil Herbert will not only add good depth to the Bears backfield but he could be the Bears new kick returner since Cordarrelle Patterson signed with the Atlanta Falcons during free agency, Herbert averaged 26.86 yards per kick off return during his final college football season while playing at Virginia Tech. I really like his balance as a running back along with his vision, quick feet good elusiveness and a very patient runner. He only had 2 career fumbles lost during his college career. I am excited about Khalil Herbert.
With the Bears second pick in the sixth round at 221 overall the Bears selected North Carolina wide receiver Dazz Newsome who is 5′ 10″, at 190 lb. Dazz provides much needed depth for the Bears receiving core at wide receiver. I love how Dazz runs good routes who picks up yards after the catch with good vision who isn’t afraid of contact. Dazz also has good expierence as a punt returner as well. I could see Dazz being the Bears slot receiver with the uncertain future of Anthony Miller.
The Bears last pick in the 6th round is Thomas Graham Jr. a corner back from the University of Oregon with the 228th overall pick. Graham opted out during the 2020 season but he did show up at the 2021 Senior Bowl in Mobile Alabama and had a really good showing. Graham is 5′ 10″,192 lbs with good ball skills as a corner who has played in both man and zone coverage. Graham is experienced with 39 starts and could be the starter opposite Jaylon Johnson at corner.
The Bears last pick was in the 7th round as the Bears picked Khyiris Tonga a defensive tackle from BYU with the 250th pick. Tonga is listed at 6′ 2″ 325 lbs, with 31″ arms. This guy is a very big physical space-eater who can take on double-teams in multiple fronts. Very underrated speed for a nose tackle who provides good depth along the Bears defensive line. It never hurts to have enough defensive lineman in today’s NFL with it being a passing league. I really liked what the Bears did in this draft and now it is time for the players to prove they are the choices for this draft class of 2021 for the Chicago Bears.
