The College Football Playoff will expand to 12 teams will begin in 2026 but could begin as early as 2024 but no later than 2026. About time the College Football Playoff expands, I personally would of done 8 teams but I think I understand why 12 teams. So the 12 teams will be the six conference champions ranked highest by the selection committee (no minimum ranking requirement), plus the six highest-ranked teams not included among the six highest-ranked conference champions. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye. The other eight teams will play in the first round with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded institution (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8.) The National Championship Game will still remain a neutral site game. With more teams on board for the College Football Playoff more revenue and more games. Right now ESPN televises all 3 games for the College Football Playoff which includes the 2 semi-final games and the National Championship game, I am guessing another TV partner will join ESPN for the College Football Playoff whenever the 12 team format begins between 2024 and 2026.
It’s great that the College Football Playoff will expand to 12 teams but I still think the usual’s like Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, Ohio State will win the National Championship but anything can happen in any given game or season. I am also interested in seeing also how the College Football Playoff will look with all this conference realignment going on like USC and UCLA joining the Big 10 in the coming years and same with Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC in the coming years. I have been a fan of College Football for many years but I feel the sport doesn’t have the best post season format because sometimes in recent years a team that doesn’t win it’s own conference still wins the National Championship in the end. I still think in the new format of the College Football Playoff their will be discussions about a team or two being left out of the College Football Playoff.
