I may be a Chicago Bears fan, but am I happy for the Detroit Lions hot start to the season so far, absolutely 100% I am. The Detroit Lions sure have had some good years here and their but they haven’t looked really good at a start of a season in a very long time. These Lions are so much fun to watch where they have so much fun young talent on both sides of the ball. What a job GM Brad Holmes and HC Dan Campbell have done turning around the Detroit Lions. I was watching their most recent game against the LA Chargers where they won a thrilling 41-38 out in Inglewood at the gun on a game winning field goal. Lions improve to 7-2 as they are looking to win the division for the first time since 1993 when back then it was the old NFC Central which is now the NFC North.
That game yesterday was so much fun to watch, as this Lions offense is so explosive with so many play makers as quarterback Jared Goff leads the way. I love the duo at running back with David Montgomery and rookie Jahmyr Gibbs combined for 193 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns between them. Montgomery the former Chicago Bears running back had a 75 yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Quarterback Jared Goff had a really good game as his offensive line didn’t allow a sack against a really good Chargers pass rush where he went 23/33 for 233 yards with 2 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. What a game Lions stud WR Amon-Ra St. Brown had catching 8 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown. St. Brown is one of the most underrated wide receivers in all of the NFL as he is so good at his position. How about Lions Rookie Tight End Sam LaPorta he has looked really good as well this season where he caught 4 passes for 40 yards.
After the Chargers tied the game at 38 with 3:34 left, I was saying to myself that the Lions offense had to go win this game as the defense couldn’t stop the Chargers high powered offense. Sure I like pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeil on the defensive line, linebackers Alex Anzalone and Jack Campbell and safeties Kerby Joseph and Branch but the Lions offense had to win them this game. Goff completed a pass to Kalif Raymond for 41 yards setting the Lions up for the game winning field goal, on a 3rd and 14 on the Chargers 38 yard line Goff completed as a pass to St. Brown to setup a 4th and 2 at the Chargers 26 yard line for a 26 yard gain to setup a 4th and 2. Do the Lions go for it or kick the field go to up 3? Lions HC Dan Campbell sure takes some risks as they went for it on 4th down a completed a 6 yard pass to rookie tight end Sam LaPorta for a huge first down as the Lions were able to take a knee to burn most of the clock as the Chargers didn’t have a timeout left. Lions called a timeout with 2 secs left as it was time for kicker Riley Patterson drilled a 41 yard field goal to get the Lions to 7-2 in a thrilling 41-38 win. These Lions can win the NFC North as long as the offense continues to produce and the defense continues to get better.
