Mister Rodgers Is Back In His Neighborhood

For the second consecutive year, Aaron Rodgers will step onto a football field on a Monday night as the quarterback of the New York Football Jets.  Once again, he will have the opportunity to literally save the entire market’s interest in the NFL season after his fellow MetLife Stadium tenants, the Giants, were humiliated in a season-opening loss.  I don’t quite think a New York metropolitan area football fan considers a 22-point home loss any more encouraging than a 40-point shutout.

But for Rodgers, his bar for improvement over last year is far lower.  As THE ASSOCIATED PRESS’ Josh Dubow reported earlier this morning:

Aaron Rodgers makes his return to the field for the New York Jets one year after his highly anticipated debut with the team ended after just four plays.

Rodgers is set to start the season opener Monday night against the San Francisco 49ers in his first game back since tearing his Achilles tendon in Week 1 last season.

The 40-year-old Rodgers spent his first 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, winning four MVPs and one Super Bowl. He was traded before the 2023 season to the quarterback-starved Jets, who have been searching for a franchise QB since Joe Namath left nearly a half-century ago.

But Rodgers’ first season with New York ended almost as quickly as it started. He ran onto the field with an American flag as part of a pregame celebration.

Then on his opening drive against Buffalo, Rodgers was sacked by Leonard Floyd and injured the Achilles. Rodgers made an attempt to return late last season but was unable to pull it off.

He didn’t play at all in the preseason so now will get his first game action of any kind against San Francisco — the team that memorably skipped over drafting him No. 1 overall in 2005 to take Alex Smith instead.

Considering that Rodgers is a native of the Bay Area and an alumnus of Cal-Berkeley, that particular oversight is one that he’s apparently been determined to rub in their faces throughout his career.  And his track record seems to show he relishes in it.  Per STATMUSE:

And his four most recent efforts between 2018-2021, the last three all played in Santa Clara, were even stronger than his career as a whole.  Collectively, he threw for more than 1000 yards, going 93 for 143 and throwing nine of those touchdowns.
For Jets fans desperate to turn a corner, and for New York area supporters seeking any reason to care at all, that sort of motivation is a positive.
But just making it to a second series intact will be seen as a start.
Courage…
